Meet Maya
Our earth lover friend.
The story of Maya
We are very proud to introduce our new friend Maya. Yogi, earth lover, and activist. Maya's work is so inspiring to us and she really is proof that every person can make an impact and do meaningful things for our planet. We got so many tips and great advice during our talk that we just had to share it with you all.
S/R: Tell us a bit about yourself...
Maya: My name is Maya. I am from Israel. I am an aromatherapist and a yoga teacher, an environmental activist, working with companies to help them create a sustainable impact through their business. And I study naturopathy and my goal is to help myself and others create the best version of themselves and take care of their home(=body). I have two big passions in my life — my love for planet earth and healing. Both of them I combine through the things I do in my day-to-day life.
S/R: You advocate for sustainable living, community, and responsible consumption. How did you become involved in this and what advice can you give those who want to consume more responsibly?
Maya: This is such a great question. My journey into this started when I was 16 and decided to go vegan. I didn’t know much yet but was sure I didn't want to contribute to this industry. I was very curious and wanted to learn more. Through my research, I found out what a negative impact this industry has on our environment. What really made me think about waste and sustainability was my trip to the US. During my time in Brooklyn, I was sitting in Champs Diner, while ordering a smoothie I asked for a plastic straw. The waitress told me that they only use metal straws out of respect for the environment. I thought to myself “WOW, I also care for the planet so what am I missing here?” While traveling I found out about the amazing world of second-hand clothes. I was so surprised to learn of the amount of waste generated by the textile industry. So when I came back to Israel I created a project called “WERBUBBLES” — vintage and second-hand clothes sale events where all profits generated during the sale get donated to non-profit organizations. My advice is if you want to start, begin with educating yourself. I started listening to podcasts and watching documentaries in order to learn more about the subject. I educated myself so I could be the best version I can and implanted this in my life. I share the way I live and what I do every day to give others inspiration to do the same.
S/R: You are a Yoga teacher. Has movement, practice, and working with your body and teaching others influencedyour idea of femininity?
Maya: Wow. the practice of yoga and I met during the time I was serving in the army. The mat was my safe space to escape and release everything that was going inside my mind. Being in the military base was very exhausting and so different from everything I knew before. Yoga made me feel more powerful, connected to the essence of who I really am. This helped me fall in love with my physical form and appreciate movement. When you connect to your body you realize how much it does every day for us to be here, you start appreciating it more, to really love it.
S/R: What made you connect to Semi/Romantic? What did you love about the brand or the Lingerie itself?
Maya: I love beautiful lingerie — I can be honest and say that through trying to be minimalist this has always been my “guilty” pleasure. But the one thing that is very important to me is finding sustainable pieces that do better for our planet earth. Discovering Semi/Romantic and the mission behind your passion was such a blessing. Every piece is so delicate and beautiful. It feels so nice on the skin. Knowing that every piece is made sustainably with so much thought behind it. This makes me feel like this is who I want to support. In every purchase we make in this world we have an impact. That's why the people, the mission, and the quality of the brand matter to me. Not only did the high quality of the pieces make me feel sexy, free, and unpowered but also the people behind Semi/Romantic made me fall in love with the brand.
S/R: Could you share with our community something you do for self-care? A ritual, food, pampering...Something that you do that is just for you, to relax or recharge or re-center yourself.
Maya: One thing that I have been doing lately is putting my phone aside for a few hours and being extra present. Practicing yoga, reading, spending time with the people I love. Focusing first on everything around me. Also, I love my morning routine. drinking a glass of lemon water every morning, using aromatherapeutic oils on my body (a game-changer), stretching..small & simple acts of self-love every day can be life-changing.
